About the Lesson

The Nightingale and the Rose is a story written by Oscar Wilde. The story revolves around a student who is in love with a beautiful girl, the Professor’s daughter. She has promised him that she would dance with him if he brings a red rose. But the student is helpless since it is winter and he cannot find any red roses. The Nightingale listens to the student’s lamentation and feels sorry for him. The bird decides to help the student and approaches various rose trees. Finally he found a red rose tree, but the tree did not have any flowers. The tree suggests that it can produce a flower if the Nightingale would sing all night by allowing the thorns of the tree to pierce its heart. A flower was there by the morning but the Nightingale was dead. Being unaware of this sacrifice, the student brings the flower to the girl’s house, but the girl rejects him. Angry and desperate, the boy throws away that flower.

The story is about true love and how the world fails to see it. Also, the writer focuses on the relationship between man and nature.
